What are social media websites?

Any website involving the conversation and interaction between individuals as well as the terminology which is used to describe that type of media is known as "social media."  The word "media" is a term that refers to the use of digital words, images and/or photos, and sounds typically shared between individuals on the internet.  Additionally, the value of this media can be cultural, financial, or even societal in nature.

Examples of the more popular social media sites

Today, there are over 100 social media websites currently operating on the internet but the primary ones are: Facebook; MySpace; and Twitter

Chances are, if you have a computer and like to surf the internet, you have at some point in time encountered one of these many social media sites and may even be a member or one or more.  The premise that these sites have been founded on is interaction with other individuals for business or social purposes.

Social media sites may work against you with your Workers Comp claim

First and foremost, you need to be aware that when you use these types of sites that they are global.  In other words, people all over the world can read the information you are sharing.  Additionally, the information listed in your account profile is highly visible as well depending on how you adjust the settings for it.  Not only is your personal information on display, so are any images, photos, and videos that you may have posted.

If you are currently in the midst of the workers comp claim process and are trying to receive benefits in a court, you have to be very careful with how you interact with your contacts or followers as they are sometimes referred to.  Should your profile information reveal information contradictory to your workers comp claim and it falls into the wrong hands, it could damage your claim and your benefits could be denied or terminated as a result.

Privacy issues

You need to realize that where workers compensation cases are concerned that the judge reviewing your case may issue an order which allows the insurance company to inspect what you have posted on your computer and you will have to turn it over to the court.  Remember the importance of your privacy settings whenever you open up a social media website account.

Many individuals have protested that this is an invasion of privacy and that the courts should not have the right to do this.
