IDD Therapy in Atlanta and How it Works

[ad_1]

IDD Therapy in Atlanta is a treatment designed to help people suffering from lower back and neck pain caused by deficiencies in the ability of the discs and facet joints to maintain a smooth pain-free movement of the vertebrae between each other.

Each of the vertebrae in your back is separated from the next by means of two facet joints and a disc.  The facet joints are lined by cartilage lubricated with synovial fluid, and this fluid can become inflamed and painful.  The disc is like an annular ring filled with an aqueous gel, known as the nucleus pulposa, which absorbs the shock between the vertebrae. Under certain conditions this can rupture, causing what is known as a herniated disc, with leakage of the gel through the fibrous covering of the disc.

Each of these conditions is very painful and can be alleviated by IDD, or Intervertebral Differential Dynamics Therapy as it is properly known. What this does is to prevent further disc rupture or leakage of the nucleus pulposa, but more importantly it helps the disc to repair itself. Previous treatments often involved nothing but pain killers and rest that did nothing to resolve the problem, and also perhaps traction.

The reason for using traction is that in order to effect a permanent cure, the discs have to be reflated to allow water and nutrients to be sucked back into the disc to reform the pulposa and start the healing process. This can be done by pulling on the vertebrae to extend the discs and so pull them open, creating a vacuum inside them just like a bellows that sucks in water and reinflates the disc.

The problem with traction is that it's impossible to use it on only the affected discs, and the general effect is lost because all the discs are pulled during traction.  IDD, on the other hand, has been designed to treat individual discs and overcome this problem.  It is very important for a successful result that the treatment is personalized to the state of the individual disc, and also that care is taken to relax any muscles that have been in spasm and to prevent further spasming during the treatment.

For these reasons, the treatment can be carried out only by well trained chiropractors and controlled by a computer.  The computer is programmed with the individual's personal needs, and then gentle pulling actions applied to the affected disc.  The angles of pull and the pressures applied by an air bladder creates a negative pressure between the vertebrae that pulls on the disc and generates the vacuum inside necessary to allow them to reabsorb the nutrients and water necessary for healing.

Although the theory of IDD Therapy in Atlanta is relatively simple, the mechanical means to achieve it is anything but, and healing is a long slow process. So much so that up to 6 weeks of treatment is necessary with 20-30 40 minute sessions.  After each session, the disc heals a little bit more, and after about 4 weeks the disc herniation is normally reduced by around 50%.

IDD Therapy is suitable for both lumber and cervical, or neck, vertebrae.  The thoracic vertebrae are of a different shape and design and do not suffer from the same problems as those that are more load-bearing. They are not designed to hold the loads or to allow the degree of movement expected of the neck or lower back.

Success Rate of IDD Therapy in Atlanta

IDD Therapy has been under close investigation regarding its success rate in treating cervical and lumbar disc herniation and, while some practices report a rate of up to 90% success, the average of a large number of tests is the 86% as previously stated. This is significantly greater than any other of the treatments used for bulging or herniated discs.

Apart from traction, there are other possible treatments involving the insertion of heated wires or microwave pulses into the disc in order to either improve the thickness and toughness of the annular sheath or to relieve the pressure inside the disc by vaporizing part of the gel. Both of these are used, but neither have the success rate of IDD Therapy which also offers the advantage of being totally non-invasive.

IDD Therapy in Atlanta is preferred to any other for these reasons, not only for the treatment of herniated discs, but also of painful facet joints that can become inflamed when they are not protected by the shock-absorbing properties of their associated disc and of pain in the sciatic nerve that can be compressed at its source as it leaves the spinal cord to travel down the leg (one on each side).  The success rate offers more chance of a permanent cure than any other treatment for cervical or lumbar back pain.
